| Recommended Specifications For
Preparation of Gypsum Board Surfaces Prior To Texture Application |
Unless otherwise indicated,
all walls, partitions, and ceilings on which gypsum board has been applied, and to which a texture is
to be added, are included.
1.1 This recommended specification covers preparation of gypsum
board prior to application of texture materials by various methods such as spray, roller, brush,
trowel, etc.
1.2 All materials to be used in accordance with all codes, specifications and
manufacturer’s recommendations.
1.3 Gypsum board finish shall be completed to the desired,
or specified level of finish prior to preparation for texture application. |

| No materials shall be applied
until a minimum temperature of 50° F has been maintained for a period of at least 48 hours in the
working area and the surface moisture has been stabilized (dry). The stated minimum temperature,
along with adequate ventilation shall be maintained throughout the texture preparation and texture
application process, and until all materials are dry and stable. Unvented gas and oil heaters shall
not be used. |
| 3. Materials And Surface Preparation |
3.1 For texture surfaces intended
as final decorative finish.
3.1A Prior to texture application, entire board surface to be treated
to minimize water soluble discoloring agents from leaching to the surface, and to minimize absorption
differential by using one of two recommended procedures: |

Apply a moisture
barrier sealer with a perm rating of 1 or less to the board surface. This product must be
compatible with, and provide a bondable surface for the texture materials to be used. |

(2) |
Apply a coat of
material specifically formulated for this purpose to the entire surface. |

(3) |
Apply a product
recommended by the texture or paint manufacturers for this purpose. Allow to dry thoroughly
before texture application. |
| Texture materials are
to be mixed and applied in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. |
